Target Audience
Anfeald’s Hazard Communication with Crystalline Silica Focus course, COM 106, is for learners who work with materials and processes that create crystalline silica exposure.
Summary
This course includes a brief review of the hazard communication regulation, introduces the student to chemical-safety related signs, labels, and safety data sheets, together with information on the Globally Harmonized System (GHS), occupational exposure limits, and crystalline-silica specific content. Instructors adjust the class for learner’s industry and exposures.
This course is suitable as both initial training and an annual refresher. This class excludes detailed respiratory protection training – Additional training and written programs are required when respirators are used.

Learning Outcomes
Course content includes:
- Describe key HazCom regulatory requirements and explain how they apply to chemical use and communication at the workplace.
- Locate and interpret critical information on Safety Data Sheets (SDS), labels, and signs, and apply this information to safe handling and emergency response.
- Identify GHS signal words, pictograms, and hazard categories, and interpret them to determine hazard type and severity.
- Define major occupational exposure limits (OELs) (OSHA PEL, NIOSH REL, ACGIH TLV®, etc.) and explain their purpose and differences.
- Identify basic types of personal protective equipment (PPE) and explain when and how each type is used to control exposure.
- Describe the health hazards associated with respirable crystalline silica, including mechanisms of lung injury and long-term disease outcomes.
- Identify specific workplace tasks that may generate respirable crystalline silica and analyze how task characteristics influence exposure potential.
- Explain the engineering controls, work practices, and respirators the employer has implemented to reduce silica exposures, and assess their effectiveness.
- Describe Table 1 tasks and controls, including conditions under which Table 1 applies and limitations associated with its use.
- Summarize the key provisions of the OSHA respirable crystalline silica standard, including exposure limits, control requirements, housekeeping rules, and recordkeeping.
- Explain the purpose and importance of medical surveillance for silica-exposed employees and describe the required elements and follow-up procedures.
Facility, Classroom, and Other Needs
Facility, classroom, and equipment needs:
- Comfortable seating, table space, and writing materials for each learner
- Sufficient space considering the anticipated headcount
- Display screen with HDMI input or screen and projector (let us know in advance if we need to bring a projector and screen)
Employers – Please disclose the materials and tasks your employees perform, and the controls they use, so the instructor can discuss these items in class.
