Target Audience
Anfeald’s Crystalline Silica for Competent Persons course, COM 501, is for safety and health managers, coordinators, project managers, superintendents, supervisors, foremen, and other learners who manage, supervise, or support employees and contractors who work with materials and processes that create crystalline silica exposure in construction. If you work for or with a general industry employer, you will also benefit, since the construction and general industry regulations are similar.
Summary
This course includes requirements from and information about the hazard communication, crystalline silica, and respiratory protection regulations, lung anatomy and function, the health effects of crystalline silica, the selection and use of controls, including a deep dive into Table 1, and other topics designed to prepare learners to fulfill regulation-mandated competent-person responsibilities for crystalline silica.

*A competent person (crystalline silica) is an individual who is capable of identifying existing and foreseeable respirable crystalline silica hazards in the workplace and who has authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate or minimize them. The competent person must have the knowledge and ability necessary to fulfill the responsibilities outlined in paragraph (g) of this section [29 CFR 1910.1153].

Facility, classroom, and equipment needs:
- Comfortable seating, table space, and writing materials for each learner
- Sufficient space considering the anticipated headcount

- Bring a paper copy of any industrial hygiene reports on crystalline silica exposure, and a copy of your existing written hazard control plan, if you have these items
