Target Audience
Anfeald’s Hydrogen Sulfide Awareness course, COM 113, is for employees who have actual or potential exposure to hydrogen sulfide and need detailed hazard communication and awareness-level training that is also ANSI Z390.1 compliant.
Summary
This course provides learners with an overview of hydrogen sulfide hazards, exposure symptoms and signs, occupational exposure levels, safe work practices, hazard controls, emergency procedures, and related content. It is designed to meet the needs of all industries with hydrogen sulfide exposure including oil and gas, wastewater treatment plants, wastewater collections and sewer, dairies and other agricultural facilities, and others. It does not include detailed respiratory protection, first aid, and rescue training, though instructors discuss these topics with learners. The instructor adjusts content based on learners’ industry and exposure.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, learners will:
- List hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide sources relevant to their industry and employer
- List the characteristics and hazards of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2)
- List the H2S and SO2 occupational exposure limits, gas detection procedures, and alarm set points for H2S and SO2
- Describe the typical symptoms associated with acute and chronic H2S and SO2 exposure
- Describe hazard avoidance procedures and safe work practices
- Describe client-specific non-emergency and emergency procedures related to H2S and SO2 as applicable*
- Explain emergency response procedures for H2S and SO2 releases including plumes, ambient weather awareness, egress routes, and muster areas
- Demonstrate use of respiratory protection equipment including client’s emergency escape breathing devices (EEBD)**
- Other related topics
*Please provide Anfeald with your employer-specific H2S procedures immediately after proposal acceptance
** When employees use SCBA, learners will need additional training to ensure competency; refer to Anfeald’s Respiratory Protection for Supplied-Air Respirators (SAR) and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), RES 303, course description for details.
Facility, Classroom, and Other Needs
Facility, classroom, and equipment needs:
- Comfortable seating, table space, and writing materials for each learner
- Sufficient space considering the anticipated headcount
- Display screen with HDMI input or screen and projector (let us know in advance if we need to bring a projector and screen)
- Respiratory protection equipment used by the employer*
- Copies of employer’s safe work practices, standard operating procedures, emergency response procedures, and job-site specific procedures related to hydrogen sulfide releases, as applicable
